Karachi:January 17:The state of affairs at Karachi University (KU) seems to be going from bad to worse as just a couple of days after exam candidates were manhandled and had their documentation torn to shreds by miscreants, students are unable to submit their fees, despite the fact that their names are on the list of new admissions. Also, five applicants claimed that they were neglected during the admission process as they were not part of the K-category, which are students from Karachi.
On Monday, the Complaints and Grievance Committee of Karachi University received the complaints of the 25 students who were unable to submit their fees. The committee was formed on January 4, 2012, by Professor Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqi and the 16th of this month was the last date to submit applications. Interestingly, all the applications were received on the very last day.
Pro Vice Chancellor KU Professor Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi was the convener of the committee, while Dean of Faculty of Management and Administrative Sciences Professor Dr Abu Zar Wajidi, Director Admission Committee Professor Dr Khalid Iraqi and Students Advisor Ansar Rizvi were the other members.
As per its Academic Council’s resolutions, the university offers admission in three different categories, including K, S and P categories. Students appearing from examination boards located in Karachi fall in the K-category, while students from other examination boards of the province are placed in S-category, which stands for Sindh. The P-category entertains students from the rest of the country. During the admission process, KU gives first priority to the students of the K-category and in case seats are available at the departments or centres, then S and P category are entertained.
According to the applicants who applied individually, they have good percentages in their previous examinations, but were not part of the K-category and that is why they were unable to gain admission to the public-run institute. On the other hand, up to 20 applicants said they got the admission and their names were mentioned in the final admission list, but could not submit their fee. This is the reason, the students say, their names were removed from the list.
The University had extended the deadline by a day to submit the tuition fees, but these students also failed to avail the opportunity, KU officials said.
Kazmi said that committee members would review these applications and then take a decision according to merit. The news.
