Karachi:November 28:The former and currently enrolled students of the Department of Microbiology, University of Karachi, have demanded in a unanimous resolution that their 85-year-old former teacher Prof Dr Syed Muhammad Khalil Chishti, who languishing in an Indian jail, be released.
A statement issued here on Sunday said that a meeting was presided over by Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Karachi Prof Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi, who also remained the chairperson of the Department of Microbiology.
It said that the participants of the meeting expressed concern and anguish over the prolonged detention of Prof Chishti in India.
“It is our moral obligation to raise voice at every level for the release of our teacher and a faculty member,” said Dr Kazmi.
Prof Dr Muhammad Rafi Shaikh said that Chishti had spent most of his life in jail and he should be released on humanitarian grounds.
It was suggested at the meeting that a core committee be formed which should prepare a strategy and run a campaign for his release.
A resolution was unanimously adopted at the meeting with the signature of 150 participants demanding the release of Prof Chishti. It also appealed to the human rights organisations to use their good offices to secure Chishti’s release.The news.
