SU Teachers, officials seal deal

KARACHI:01 February: The negotiations between the representatives of Governor’s Committee and Sindh University Teachers Association on Tuesday evening proved fruitful wherein the two sides reached an agreement to end the standoff. According to reports, on the demand of protesting teachers, it was decided that SU Vice Chancellor Dr Nazir Mughal would be sent on medical leave for three months, while Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Parveen Shah will be given additional charge of the VC’s office. The Sindh University Teachers Association (SUTA) will immediately resume academic activities\classes in the university. Meanwhile, the SUTA termed the VC’s sending on leave as their significant success after the struggle of one month. Following the murder of Prof Bashir Channar, the teachers started the protest and boycott of classes. At least 30,000 students’ future was on stake because of teachers’ struggle who were not ready to take classes until their demands were met.Finally, the Sindh Governor formed a committee comprised of Liaqat Medical University VC Dr Noshad Shaikh, Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur VC Dr Nelofer Shaikh and others, who held talks with the representatives of SUTA which represented by Arfana Mallah, Azhar Ali Shah and others.VC Nazir Mughal has been sent on forced leave for three months and a committee comprised of four deans will run the university affairs, claimed the SUTA leaders. They also claimed the setting up of a judicial commission to conduct an inquiry into the murder of Prof Bashir Channar. Former director student affairs and head of the disciplinary committee, Prof Channar, was shot dead on the university’s premises about month ago. During his tenure, the disciplinary committee had rusticated 19 students and banned four others from entering the university because of their violent behaviour.Meanwhe, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad on Tuesday night signed an Ordinance, aimed at regularising the services of IBA examination-pass 5800 teachers who were protesting for a long time. The IBA teachers on Tuesday took out a rally from Press Club to Governor’s House, where police baton charged them and arrested a large number of teachers. Later, in the late night, the Sindh Governor issued the Ordinance, regularising the services of protesting teachers. These teachers were serving in the Education Department for the last three years.Earlier, in the day, the Education Minister said that the government would regularize the IBA-passed teachers, for which a summary had been sent to the Governor for a final approval.Nation.
