FUUAST closed for two days

Karachi:The Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science & Technology (FUUAST) will remain closed on Wednesday and Thursday, after clashes were reported on Tuesday between the Imamia Students’ Organisation (ISO) and Rangers personnel posted on the campus.

The clashes had initially erupted on Saturday when Rangers personnel tried to stop an ISO procession. Members of the ISO responded by pelting stones at the Rangers, who retaliated by beating the students. Some Ranger personnel were injured in the stone-throwing incident, and the FUUAST administration suspended classes on Monday. When the university reopened on Tuesday, Rangers personnel recognised some students who were entering the campus as those who had pelted stones at them on Saturday.

They chased the students and tried to get hold of them. The students rushed to the next block, which houses the offices of the vice-chancellor (VC), where they were cornered. VC Dr Muhammad Qaiser came to their rescue, however, and did not allow the Rangers to arrest them. Other students also came over for support, and the police fired teargas shells to disperse them. Rangers’ high-ups were then called in to negotiate with the university authorities.

Meanwhile, activists of the Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) and Punjabi Students Association (PSA) clashed at the University of Karachi (KU). According to a KU security official, PSA members erected a barbed wire fence in front of the Central Library. The fence blocked the path of people who wanted to go to the mosque for prayers. The IJT demanded that the fence be removed, but the PSA declined. This resulted in a clash. The news
