Karachi:The culture of corruption and moral decline has become a part of our national character and now we have reached a point where corrupt practices either go unnoticed or admired by others. The education sector, from primary to higher level, has become a source of filling the coffers of teachers and officials.
Education policies come and go but disarray remains forever. Postings and transfers, increments and perks are the main goals of a majority of the people — students being the least concern.
The University of Karachi (KU), the largest university of the country, is passing through difficult times. The helm of the university is with someone who is a poet. “The university is sinking” is the VC’s observation but there is no desire to plug the holes. Aging advisers are roosting at his office while the young and highly educated teachers are being ignored.
The VC has just returned form a two-week long tour of India where he attended Mushairas and literary events. This attitude is causing disappointment among the teaching and non-teaching staff, who say that the university suffers from his prolonged visits. The acting vice chancellor cannot take any decision except attending the events at the university and using the facilities given to a vice chancellor.
The Karachi University Teachers Society (KUTS) is imitating political parties by using its tenure to extract maximum benefits for its office-bearers and support them in their misdeeds. It is unfortunate that there are many instances where they (the office-bearers) are involved in irregularities but KUTS continues to support them. An assistant professor in the Mass Communication Department Samina Qureshi has defaulted on her scholarship by not obtaining a degree from Holland and failing to return the money (about two million rupees) to the Establishment Division.
The third death anniversary of Sarwar Nasim, a former associate professor of the Department of Mass Communication, was observed on February 15. The Karachi University Teachers Society (KUTS) and its breakaway faction Karachi University Teachers Guild (KUTG) found it expedient to use the memory of the noble teacher for their own political agenda. Both groups organised programmes to commemorate the day in their own rustic style. Speakers after speakers spoke about their warm relationship with the departed soul only to project themselves.perwez.abdullah@thenews.com.pk
